This is a six-week course which takes us to Italy in the 1300s, the century of transition from the medieval era to the dawn of the Renaissance. We will focus on Boccaccio, with The Decameron as our principal reading, along with references to his two great contemporaries, Petrarch and Dante. The cultural and societal history of the age will not be neglected, as the art and architecture which characterize this century will be an intrinsic part of the course. We will meet Arnolfo di Cambio, Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, and other great artists of the period. Before the first class meeting, please purchase The Decameron, by Boccaccio, Penguin Classics, 2nd edition, translated by G.H. McWilliams. Location: Raytheon Room

This art series features three of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century-Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. Regarded by many as the most significant artist of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was born in Malaga, Spain, and lived most of his adult life in France. Throughout his long career, he created inventive and experimental works which included painting, sculpture, ceramics, etchings, lithographs and stage design. His diverse and varied styles range from his early, melancholic works of his Blue Period, through his Cubist works, to his haunting Surrealist works and finally to his reworking of works of the old masters. The French artist, Henri Matisse (1869-1954), believed that art should be joyous and "devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter". An extremely versatile artist, his inventive works include oil paintings, sculpture, prints and collage or "cut-outs". His images include bold interiors, colorful landscapes, patterned still lifes, decorative odalisques and geometric cut-outs, which are brightly colored paper shapes arranged in expressive abstract designs. Born in Vitebsk, Russia, Marc Chagall (1887-1985), lived most of his adult life in France. Constantly seeking new forms of expression, his unique and individualistic style reveals a wide range of influences, such as Cubism, Fauvism, Surrealism and Expressionism. His works, which are a symphony of color, depict themes of love, biblical stories, Jewish culture and memories of Vitebsk. In addition to working in a variety of media, such as oils, lithographs, etchings and sculpture, Chagall designed ceramics, mosaics, tapestries, stained glass windows and stage sets. Join Judy Schurgin for three lectures devoted to these creative, talented and influential twentieth century artists. Location: Raytheon Room

This pre-Inca civilization in the high jungle of Peru resembles some of the Mayan ruins uncovered at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chachapoya left countless sites, mummies and mausoleums behind that are now covered by thick vegetation. Today, spectacular findings are allowing us to better understand this unknown civilization and its connections with the Inca Empire. Daniel is an active archaeologist who has conducted excavations and mapping projects throughout the Andes. He has an M.A. in Archaeology and has served as an advisor for both the BBC and the Discovery Channel in the production of documentaries of Andean ancient civilizations.
